Covetable lingerie label, The Lake & Stars, has teamed up with BOFFO and architectural firm SOFTlab on a downtown Manhattan pop-up shop that’s opening today. The space has already housed micro-retailing outlets from Patrick Ervell,Nicola Formichetti, and Irene Neuwirth. Now the The Lake & Stars’ duo has taken over, transforming the Tribeca storefront into a kaleidoscopic work of art—complete with limited-edition designs and custom-made Air Force Ones (yes, you read that correctly).
“We wanted to approach it like a giant viewfinder,” explained Maayan Zilberman, one of the label’s designers. ”It’s a nostalgic and futuristic version of a peep show.” said Nikki Dekker, her counterpart. The store is made of an iridescent acrylic and shaved faux fur façade with windows that let you peer in at the mannequins, each of which is dressed in an archival array from label’s 10-season history. Look a little closer and you’ll see that the mannequin’s faces were inspired by Zilberman and Dekker themselves! ”We went to Rootstein [the famed mannequin producers], they’re helping to sponsor the space. It was incredible, we had such a blast!”
The only thing that’s entirely visible from the shop’s exterior are the mannequin’s militant procession of Nike Air Force Ones that will be available by special order. ”We thought our designs needed a bit of athleticism, pairing them with our stilettos was a bit romantic for us,” said Dekker. Even if you’re not in the mood for lingerie or custom-made kicks, the girls have you covered with an array of knick-knacks including sleepover toothbrushes, stripper nesting dolls, and candles “blessed by a voodoo practitioner in California.” So head down to 57 Walker street where the shop will be open for the next two weeks. The girls even promise that they’ll be around for special fittings by appointment.
