Nov. 5 – Nov. 11
A new release from Bradford Cox‘s solo project, Atlas Sound, is always welcomed here in the cafe. As one of the most prolific and talented artists in the world of indie music – whether with his band Deerhunter, soloing as Atlas Sound, or collaborating with other artists and bands – Cox continues to turn out terrific music as evidenced by his latest release,Parallax. This week, one of his new singles, “Terra Cognito,” is the No. 1 track, according to IRC listeners. Canadian band Said The Whale has really impressed a lot of music fans, including ourselves, with their releases over the past year, but their recent EP, New Brighton, has put them in our Best Breakthrough Bands of 2011 realm, and made the EP one of the best Eps of the 2011.
The almost iconic track, “New Brighton,” deservedly captured the No. 2 spot for this week’s Top Ten Songs, followed by the The Band of Bees, who remind us of early Van Morrison, especially on their No. 3 track, “I Really Need Love.” Right in the top five is the upbeat girl pop track of Summer Girl‘s “Better Off Without You,” which sounds as close to Best Coast then any other band we can think of. Another Breakout Band of 2011, in our opinion, is Built Like Alaska, who took the No. 5 song of the week with the superb track, “Antique Love,” from their new album, In Trouble Times. We like the album so much that we’ve also noted Built Like Alaska as a Band to Watch in 2012.
